Representational
I chose to focus on the palm warbler bird. These birds are small and range between 4.7 to 5.5 inches. Originally from Canada, they spend their winters in Florida and other Southern states. The bird house overall has a subtle Western Style. Focusing on feathers and building character through texture seen on the corrugated roof and stucco style walls. The right-side features two paper strings, for the purpose of protecting the warblers and keeping out predators. One central hinge on the roof allows users to open and close the bird house as needed, and drainage holes on the bottom allow any water or fine particles to fall out and avoid buildup. The rendering carries on the Western aesthetic by using vibrant turquoise, orange, and brown colors.
Abstract
Building with a subtle Western aesthetic, I built the bird house focusing on the element of the feathers. Feathers symbolize the freedom and migration of birds. By cutting out feathers from the bird house and making it so one can see through it, the palm warbler’s future and travel is signified. The more generations that use the house, the more migrations take place, where the birds use their feathers to fly across states and into another country. The transparency of the walls also signifies looking through or ahead, signifying the birds of different origins and ages will nest in the house continuing the species and showing their future. The feathers are structured in columns, having offset cross sections. While the design serves a structural purpose, it also creates the pattern which was cut from the house walls to create the transparent or see through effect.
Non-Representational
The design elements used were texture, shape, form, lines, variety, and unity. The texture across all shapes helps develop visual interest in making them pop out against everything else. Using two oval shapes, the largest component, with the connecting rectangles blended both together to become a continuous line. As a border, it serves to frame and support the structure. Unity was created by the harmonious rectangles and their straight lines, bringing forth variety to differentiate between the ovals.
